About APEAS

A coveted Architectural education in Scotland is held in high esteem by professional practices around the world. Following a period of academic study and practice, the most important step to becoming a professional Registered Architect is taking your Part 3 Examination in Professional Practice. Those having studied or worked in Scotland usually take their Part 3 via The Architects Professional Examination Authority in Scotland Ltd (APEAS) in order to gain registration with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and legally call themselves an Architect.

APEAS is a not-for-profit examinations authority. Its mission is to deliver the Part 3 Examination in Professional Practice and Management in Architecture. In doing that, APEAS will provide a high-quality assessment process that is fair, valid and reliable to all of its candidates. APEAS will seek to continually enhance that process, and the values of professionalism, inclusivity and fairness will underpin and inform all of its interactions and activities. The APEAS Part 3 Examination is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and APEAS is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Recent Testimonial

Charlene Gilmour

After completing the Part 3 course this year, the information on the APEAS website proved to be a valuable resource when preparing for the exam. The key dates and the guides were particularly useful, and I often referred to the ‘Guide for Candidates’ to keep myself on track. The past papers available on the website also formed a key part of my studies in the run up to the written exam. Despite my fears of the oral exam at Hampden Park, the staff at APEAS were very helpful and the external examiners kept me at ease throughout the whole process.

Why sit your Part 3 Examination with APEAS?

The APEAS Part 3 Examination has some distinct advantages over other routes to Part 3 success.  Firstly, as a registered not-for-profit organisation, APEAS are able to keep their fees significantly lower than universities in other parts of the UK offering Part 3 examinations. Secondly, in collaboration with the five Scottish Schools of Architecture, the examination is designed, managed and delivered by practicing professional Architects, which ensures that the participants receive the highest quality of real-world professional experience and guidance.

This important difference  is well known throughout the industry and is the reason why those successfully achieving their Part 3 with APEAS are so highly regarded. Thirdly, and importantly, the APEAS examinations are assessed and marked by practicing Architects who will make sure that all successful candidates are fully competent and ready to become a registered Architect and enter professional practice.

Schools we work with

APEAS works together with but also independently from the 5 Scottish Schools of Architecture and is independently responsible for all aspects of the Part 3 Examination in Professional Practice in Scotland. APEAS is fully accredited with both RIBA and the ARB and works closely with RIAS as a member of its Education Committee.

With its renowned reputation for the quality and the professional practice focus of its examination and assessment processes APEAS is rapidly becoming the preeminent examination provider for those seeking to become professional Architects, not just for those in Scotland but nationally and internationally too.
